December Update

I’ve been accepted to training in January!! Praise God! Thank you so much for praying that this would become a reality!

At first I heard that the training was 100% full, and I was put on the wait-list. 4 days later, I found out that somebody had to drop out of the training, and it opened up a spot for me! Thank you, thank you, thank you for praying! God is at work and moving things along to see His work done in Spain. As Job said to God in Job 42:2  “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”

I will attend the cross-cultural ministry training in North Carolina from Jan. 21-Feb. 21. Then I’ll come back home until I can leave for Spain for good. A couple of things need to come together yet in order for me to leave for Spain. First, I need 100% monthly support, then I apply for my visa which takes 1-3 months to get, and then I can go to Spain!

Thank you so much for being part of bringing the good news to Spain! As we celebrate Jesus’ birth this Christmas, I am praying for the people in Spain who don’t have the joy of knowing Jesus personally. Many Spaniards don’t know about His unconditional love. Check out the video that asks Spaniards “What is love?” and “Does unconditional love exist?”  http://vimeo.com/22079895

Thank you for helping share about the unconditional love that God has for us! May you and your family be blessed this Christmas season as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Thank you so much for making an eternal impact in the lives of Spanish people.

Merry Christmas!

Financial Support

Thank you all so much for all your support and encouragement thus far. It’s amazing to see how God has brought together this team and provided all the outgoing costs! Praise Him!

We are at about 84%* with monthly support. Only reoccurring gifts made annually, quarterly, and monthly help increase the percentage of monthly support.

Please pray with me that God would bring in 100% by Christmas! (A huge miracle!) We need 100% very soon to make the goal of getting to Spain by March a reality.

Thank you so very much for all you’ve given in your finances and prayers. YOU are making eternal changes for God’s kingdom. Thank you!

*My records show 84% monthly, but World Team's records are a bit different because not everyone who has indicated support to me has also indicated this support to World Team.

Praise God for:
  • Immanuel: God with us!
  • Christmas
  • His promises & love
  • 75% monthly support & training in January!
Ask God for:
  • Spanish people to come to know Jesus & His love
  • 100% of monthly needs to be met
  • Comfort for Betsy, my teammate in Cáceres. Her father passed away this month and her mother passed away earlier this summer.

November Update

Thank you so much for all your prayers and encouragement. I am amazed by the team that God has brought together for His work in Spain. I feel so blessed to be able to do His work with you!

These past couple weeks have been a roller coaster ride for me. I have hit high highs in joy and have gone to low lows in tears. There have been a lot of changes from not being able to go to training - to getting more time with family and friends - to actually being able to register for training - to losing that time with family and friends - to waiting upon clearance for training.

Currently, I’m pre-registered for training in January BUT I cannot and will not go to training if I don’t have 75% of my monthly support. I also cannot go if the JAARS training program doesn’t have a spot for me. The person in charge of registration is out of the country until Dec. 4th - more waiting. (God sure is teaching me to be patient and trust Him!) Please join me in prayer that everything will come together for training in January if it be God’s will.

As far as current support goes, I have 69% monthly support. Please pray with me that God would continue to release His heaven stores and provide what is needed. I have the opportunity to share with some local churches in the upcoming weeks about God’s work in Spain and invite others to join in it. Please pray that people’s hearts would be stirred and that they would follow through with making commitments to be part of what God is doing in Spain. God has already provided over 100% of outgoing costs! We can surely trust in His provision for what we need. Praise God!

We hope and pray that I can attend training Jan. 21-Feb. 21, leave for Spain in March, attend language school March-May, help with the internship and basketball camp over the summer, and be in Cáceres to start the school year in September. However, this is the goal. We ultimately trust in God's timing. I am eager to join in the work in Spain and believe that this is what God has equipped me to do. While it is hard to think about leaving, I am confident God has prepared me to join Him in Spain - and that is exciting!

Thank you so much for joining in the work that God is doing in Spain! We could not do this without each other, and I feel so blessed to be able to join with you in this work. Thank you for following God’s leading to take part prayerfully and/or financially. YOU are making an eternal difference! Thank you!

With love,
Kelsey

October Update

Hello praying friends & family!

World Team Spain let me know that I will be joining the team in Cáceres! Tim & Paula Tjernagel and their kids (who Gibbsville Reformed Church supports) have been serving in Cáceres for over 13 years.
They serve with Betsy, a single woman their age, and Kristin, a single woman a little older than me. Betsy has been serving in Cáceres for 12 years, and Kristin has been in Spain full-time since this summer.

Cáceres is a city of 90,000 people and located 3 hours southwest of Madrid. In this city of 90,000 people, there are 2 evangelical churches. That’s right 2. One of those churches is the one Tim, Paula and Betsy have been leaders in starting. The church now has Spaniards in leadership, and they are working on planting another church in a nearby town called Arroyo de la Luz. I will work with the Spaniards in this church-planting effort through evangelism and outreach events.

Part of my job in Cáceres will also be to reach university students with the gospel and connect them with the local church.  There is a university in Cáceres that has roughly 12,000 students, and there is no Christian ministry present. My job will probably also include teaching English to small groups of students, and I may even coach basketball! These outreach activities in the community will all be done in an effort to share the gospel and connect people with the local church.

I am very excited to join the team in Spain, and it’s beginning to feel real now. Up until this point, it’s felt like a far-off goal. While I am excited, I’m also sad as this reality that I’ll be leaving family, friends, and home is sinking in. Thankfully, I have the promise that God is always with me and will never leave me. I believe God will provide friends and “family” in Spain, but I just can’t see it now and that’s what makes it hard. So I have to prayerfully focus on the good and continue to trust God’s character. Having said that, finding a balance between moving forward in partnership development to get to Spain and soaking up memories with family is hard. Please pray that I trust God’s timing for getting to Spain and serving there and trust His leading for my current moments and memories with family and friends.

Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement, and support. I thank God for you daily and am just in awe of how we’ve all been united for the purpose of brining the gospel to Spain. Thank you so much for following God’s leading to do so. You are a great encouragement to me, and I pray you are blessed in this ministry too.

With all my love,
Kelsey

Spain video
Thanks to Carrie Vick for all her hard work in creating this video! It is intended to share about the need in Spain and invite others into the ministry to reach Spain with the gospel.  Please use this video as another avenue to invite your friends, small group, or church into the ministry in Spain. 100%

WOW! God has provided 100% of the $31,000 out-going costs! His provision is amazing! Thank you to each one of you who have helped make this possible. Thank you for giving to God in this way and being part of bringing the gospel to Spain. It seems unreal, and it’s a little hard to stop and take in how amazing that is as I continue to pray for 100% monthly. But when I take the time to think about all that God has already provided, I am amazed and so very grateful. His provision in this way affirms that He is calling me to Spain and will continue to provide. Praise God!

67%

We’re at 67% monthly, and the training in January is fast approaching. I need 75% monthly to sign up for the training. If I miss this training in January, I will have to wait until July for the next one. Please help us reach the goal of 75%. Roughly $50/month is 1% of the monthly need, so if there are 8 people who feel God leading them to invest in bringing the gospel to Spain with $50/month, we will have 75%!

You may be praying for the ministry already, have given a one-time gift, or are hearing about the need in Spain for the first time. And maybe now God is leading you to invest monthly in the ministry in Spain? If so, please don’t hesitate to contact me for more information on how you can make an eternal difference in the lives of Spanish people.

September Update

Thank you so much for your prayers while I was in Spain!

Carmen’s wedding was absolutely gorgeous! It was so neat so see Carmen’s calm spirit and trust in the Lord throughout everything. I am so thankful I was able to be part of her special day. Joaquín and her are so excited to start their lives together. Please pray for them as they begin their married lives.

After the wedding, I spent a week visiting the different sub-teams of World Team Spain. It was a great opportunity to get to know the teams, their cities, and their visions and to see how God might use me on each team. The sub-teams are in 4 cities - check out my previous blog posts to read more about them.

A key element in where I will serve is the team I will work with. Since I am single, the team agrees it is important that I have teammates who I can connect with and have solid relationships with. Part of me believes it would be really nice to be married to be able to go anywhere God might call me rather than be “limited” in focusing more on team than location/need, but in my heart I know that I’m really not limited. God has me single for this stage in life for a reason and team will forever be an important aspect of life whether married or not. Each sub-team in Spain can use more help though! The need in Spain is so great, and we need more workers to share the gospel. Maybe God wants you to serve in Spain too?!

While the need in Spain is so great and God could use me in some capacity on any team, we want the team where I can best use the gifts God has given me to further His kingdom. I have discussed with Tim, the field director for Spain, where I think God could use me on the team. The whole World Team Spain team has a retreat this coming weekend where they will discuss how and where they think God could best use me. Please be in prayer for the team and this allocation process! It will affect where WE do ministry together.

Thankfully, the trip reignited my passion to reach Spain with the gospel. There is such great spiritual need. I am anxious to get back and share God’s love with the people! Check out below how you can help me get there. Thank you for taking part in helping bring the gospel to Spain. Your prayers, support, and encouragement are deeply valued and needed. Thank you!

With love and thankfulness,
Kelsey

Partnership Development

God is providing in amazing ways! It is so humbling and amazing to watch God work and move in ways I never imagined. Thank you to those of you who are already part of the team to bring the gospel to Spain. We have over 100 prayer partners! We have 67% of the monthly needs met, and we have 87% of the one-time needs met. Praise God!

There is a training in January that I need to attend. However, I need 75% of my financial support in order to attend this training. If I miss this training, I will have to wait until July to go. Please help us this month in reaching 75% of our monthly needs. $50 per month equates to a little over 1% of my monthly needs. If just 8 people would commit to $50/month, we'd have 75%! If 4 families would commit to $100/month, we'd have 75%!

Please pray about how you, your small group, or your church could take part in the ministry in Spain. I'd love to meet with you and discuss how we could partner together. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to meet!

Day 10

Pricilla, Sara, and Kristen
We met Sara and Priscilla today and walked around the city with them. Sara is a evangelical believer from Malaga who came to study here in Cáceres because there are so few believers. Ever since she was young, she wanted to do missions in Africa as a nurse. I have not met someone like her here before! She really wants to reach the university students, and is forming a group with the Christians here to do so. Last year they didn't have much success at all, so they are brainstorming and praying for this year. Priscilla is originally from Michigan and came here to teach English for this year.

The catholic church in Arroyo de la Luz
This afternoon, Tim took Kristen and I to Arroyo de la Luz. It is a pueblo of 6,500 people where there is no evangelical church and only 3 families of believers. The church in Cáceres hopes to plant a church there.

Day 9

Paul & Tamara's family
Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of Miguel & Carolina's family.

Craig took me on a running trail up the mountain this morning, and it was really pretty. It was the most green I've seen on this trip! We had breakfast with Doug and Amy, and then he put me on the bus to Cáceres. Tim was at the bus station and then took me to Badajoz to meet the team there. I had lunch with Paul who's from the Dominican Republic, his wife Tamara who's from Slovakia, and their 3 kids (17,14,9?). Paul is an evangelist, and Tamara is gifted in music and has begun 2 choirs that evangelize to the region of Extremadura. They have a vision to see churches planted in the small towns around Badajoz. Towns of 4,500-6,000 that have no evangelical witness. They desire to see other nations come and help build these churches. They've involved a church in Nebraska that comes with a group of college students who live in Spanish peoples homes n Alberqueque for a couple weeks in the summer and love the people and build relationships that way. I really like this! because I want to involve more of YOU, my team, in coming to Spain and doing ministry here too. Paul and Tamara are working with another couple who I met after lunch. Miguel is Spanish and his wife, Carolina, is from Luxembourg. Miguel is a pastor, and Carolina is gifted in music and hospitality. They also have 3 kids (17,15,11?). After getting to know each other, they took me to the bus station to go back to Cáceres. Tim was there again to pick me up, and we went to his house where we had dinner with Paula and Kristen. (Kristen came to Cáceres for the weekend.) It's been a full day but a good day. God is good all the time. All the time, God is good.

Day 8

Doug & Amy's family.
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of Craig & Ada's family.

I spent the morning in Salamanca and then came to Bejar with Ada, who is a missionary with World Team. Ada is Spanish and her husband, Craig, is originally from South Carolina and has been in Spain for 27 years. They have 4 kids, 3 are living in Salamanca (1 with the university ministry there and 2 in college). Doug and Amy are also World Team staff here in Bejar. Doug is from South Carolina and Amy is from Racine; they have 2 kids (6 and 2 years old?). There basically isn't a need for me in Bejar because there is already an established church and not many youth. However, they're praying about a church-plant in Salamanca, and I could be used there. It's not really been formulated as a plan yet and seems not definitive at all. We'll see what God has for this Bejar team as they have 2 cell groups in smaller towns nearby.

Day 7

I had a really great day with Kristen today. It was nice getting to know her more and being able to share our hearts for Spain. She showed me the school where she's taking Spanish classes, which is most likely where I will take classes too. She also brought me to meet some people who are part of the university ministry in this city. I learned a lot from her just about the adjustment of moving to Spain and being alone in this city. I think we'd work really well together. Whether or not we're in the same city, I don't know at this point, but I do know it'll be great having her as a teammate on the Spain field.

Day 6

Julia, Johan, Cesar, & Hannah

I spent the morning talking with Heidi Schmidt and getting to know her and her family more. Then we went to the market and stood by a table where they rent books to people for free. They've been doing it every week as a way to connect with people but haven't had much feedback from it. One lady did stop by who knew Heidi and Julia and told them she had questions about the Holy Spirit as she didn't think the Holy Spirit was a separate entity but rather a force/strength within her. They made plans to meet this weekend and see what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit. After the book table, I went with Heidi to pick up her kids, Brian & Cecilia, from school. Many parents were waiting outside the school, and I can see how you could possibly begin relationships talking with other parents there. We had lunch at Cesar and Julia's house where I got to know them better. Cesar is originally from Colombia, and Julia is from Germany. They both accepted Christ in Spain and then went to seminary in Madrid, where they met. They have two kids Johan (3) and Hannah (1 1/2). Cesar said he is praying for me to be on their team and was trying to convince me to join them. He said they need someone young to reach the youth and that I could teach English, coach basketball, be close to Madrid and host people flying in and out, which I thought would be nice to involve you (my home team) in visits and serving in Spain and possibly in intercambio relationships with the Spanish families. After lunch, I got to go to the dentist with Cesar's family, and then he took me to Madrid to take the bus to Salamanca.

Salamanca is where I will most likely study Spanish for the first 6 months that I'm here. Kristen Bond, a full-time staff member with World Team, began her service here in Spain 3 months ago and has been studying here in Salamanca. It's been fun to get to know her, and I'm looking forward to getting to know her more tomorrow and seeing more of the city. When Kristen finishes her studies in Salamanca, she will join the team in Caceres and focus on a university ministry. It's possible that we will be future teammates in that ministry if God leads me to serve in Caceres.

Day 5

I was able to enjoy the morning with Carmen's family while trying to figure out the meeting plans with World Team. Carmen and Joaquín joined us for lunch and picked up their suitcases for their honeymoon. They are going to Boston, NYC, and Washington D.C. I'm very excited for them and can't wait to hear about it! Since Carmen's parents were taking them to the airport, they insisted on bringing me to Velilla to meet up with World Team teammates. I insisted on taking the metro as they had already been far too good to me, but they wouldn't back down. It was very nice and generous of them to do that, and I can't say thank you to them enough for all the kindness and love they showed to me. They treated me like family; Carmen's mom said I was their adopted daughter as one moved out, another moved in. I thank God for them and am completely humbled by their generous love.

I met Cesar who brought me to Marvin & Heidi Schmitt's house where I spent the day and night. Marvin and Heidi are both missionary's kids who grew up in Paraguay, married and lived in Paraguay for 7 years, then in Canada for 6 years, came to Spain 2 1/2 years ago with Avant ministries, and joined the World Team Spain team 1 1/2 years ago. Their kids are Carla (13), Brian (10), and Cecilia (6). Velilla is a liberal town of about 15,000 with no evangelical church. They are having a hard time making friends and seeing any fruit. They find the soil very hard here. Many families have moved to Velilla recently, so their is a lot of youth that I could potentially work with. One woman we met in the park said that yes, I should come so I can teach the kids English from a native speaker. We'll see what God has in store!

Day 4

It sure was strange crawling into bed at 7 a.m. instead of getting out of bed at that time. It was great to have this day to rest and continue enjoying time with Carmen's family. Tomorrow begins the week with World Team. Please pray that I would hear God's voice, enjoy the week and not analyze every moment but trust God to make the big picture clear.

Carmen & Joaquín's Wedding Day!

Getting ready...

The whole day was so beautiful. It was great to spend the day with Carmen while she got ready. She was so calm and acknowledged this day was very special but wasn't a "princess day" as she referred to it. She was excited to begin living together with Joaquín and have each other for the rest of their lives. Carmen was so calm and not picky about anything; she trusted everything to God's hands. And it was beautiful! Their ceremony was very special, and people noted how special it was because of their relationships with Christ. Dinner and dancing took us through the night, and it was all so beautiful. Praise God for this new couple who have devoted themselves and their marriage to Christ!

Day 2

I promise I have pictures of us doing other things than eating, but I don't want to reveal anything related to the wedding before the big day!
Today we could all sleep in, and it was much needed! We enjoyed a relaxing morning, and then Carmen and Joaquin got to spend the afternoon together. I really enjoyed the time I got with Carmen's family and was able to practice my translating skills by going between the Spanish and American families. I am learning so much Spanish by living with Carmen's family. We've had a couple people ask if I'm Carmen's sister, and that is very fun as I always wanted a sister (although I do have one now in Ashley : ). I feel so blessed and unworthy to be given such special time with Carmen and her family and to know such a loving, generous, and kind family. They are truly wonderful. I thank God for this time and am excited for Carmen's big day tomorrow!

Day 1

It was such a joy and blessing to be with Carmen and her family today! We were very busy, and Carmen has been extremely busy all week preparing for the big day. Please pray for her to get the rest she needs! We enjoyed a nice dinner tonight with Carmen's Spanish & USA (host) family as well as Joaquin's USA (host) family too. I thank God for a fun-filled day and am so ready for bed after just an hour of sleep on the flight over. Praise God for this blessed day!

What's coming up?

It's hard to believe school is right around the corner, isn't it?  As the summer is coming to a close, there are a strange mix of emotions for me. I’m so thankful for all the experiences that God gave me this summer but yet feeling like I missed out on home since I was gone so much. I have so much I still want to get done but yet want to enjoy the last of our sunny days too. I’m thankful for the job I have this fall but nervous for the workload. I want to learn from Paul and be content in all circumstances, Philippians 4:11-13. I often miss the joy of what’s going on around me because I’m anticipating the next thing or wanting to change something minor. I pray that God would teach me to be content.

And when school resumes, I will return to Cleveland Elementary as a full-time Educational Assistant (fancy name for a teacher’s aide :) where I will work with Spanish-speaking students who need to learn English. It’s a perfect fit for this season of life as I will get to use Spanish daily but not have the full workload of a teacher. I get to love on kids and be loved by them and also form stronger relationships with the staff. I’m a little nervous to be full-time at an elementary school but am trusting it will draw me closer to the Lord as I rely on Him for love, energy, and patience for each day.

I’m also a little nervous to go back to full-time work. I never understood how people could be “raising support full-time,” until I started to develop partners myself. I can’t expect others to understand the process. I just need to confess that I’m anxious about trying to find balance in my life while working full-time at school and continuing to develop partners for the ministry in Spain. Please pray for me that I can trust God fully one day at a time, trusting Him for today, and leaving tomorrow in His hands too.  Our God is the all-powerful, all-sustaining, life-giving God who meets all our needs. I can and will trust in Him, but I ask for your help to do that.

Thank you all for your support, love, encouragement, and sacrifice to be part of the ministry in Spain. I cannot seem to find the words to express how thankful I am for you. Each time I read through your names in my partnership files or think of you, I am moved to gratitude and awe. It’s so humbling that you would desire to take part of this ministry and help me get to Spain. And yet I’m reminded that it’s not about me, you’re in this for the Lord. I’m so thankful that God has united our lives to change lives in Spain. Please be encouraged and know that you are essential to the eternal changes God is making in Spanish people’s lives. You are so important in this ministry. Thank you for making a difference!

A trip to Spain!

On Wednesday, September 11 (please pray for safety!), I will fly out from Chicago and land in Madrid, Spain on Thursday morning. My Spanish friend, Carmen, will be married on Saturday, and I will spend the days leading up to the wedding with her and her family. Her family has graciously offered to let me stay with them even against my protest as I don’t want to add to their stress, but they insist. I am so thankful that God has given me this friendship with Carmen and is allowing me to be part of this special time in her life. I’m so excited for her and am really looking forward to her wedding day!

Since a typical Spanish afternoon wedding has the ceremony at 6:00 (yes, that's the afternoon in Spain), dinner from 9:30-11:30, and dancing until 4 a.m., I’ll take Sunday to sleep a little bit and be with Carmen’s family. Then, I will join the World Team staff on Monday, Sept. 16 and be with them until I fly home on Monday, Sept. 23. During this week that I’m with World Team, I will be visiting the different teams in Spain. World Team has missionaries in 9 or 10 different cities, and I will be visiting as many of the teams as I can to get a feel for what city is the best fit for me to serve in.

The team and I will take time after my visit to pray about where God might use me (and you!). We pray for our hearts to be aligned for the same place. Please join us in prayer for this time that I’m in Spain. Pray that God would lead us to know where He wants to use me (and you!) in Spain and make it clear to the whole team.

Praying for Spain!

I hope you are enjoying your summer! It’s been a fun-filled,busy summer for me so far, and there are still many exciting events yet to come.
One of the highlights thus far was seeing my fellow teammates serving in Spain, Tim & Paula Tjernagel. They came to Gibbsville Reformed Church for a few days, and we were able to share breakfast together on one of them. It was encouraging to be with them as they relieved a lot of pressure I was putting on myself to work hard on partnership development. I feel much more free now to enjoy the process and allow partnership development to ebb and flow in God's hands.

It was also encouraging to be with them because they reminded me about the great need in Spain with stories and statistics.
For instance, they are serving in Cáceres, a city of 100,000 people. In that city there are only 2 evangelical churches and only about 80 evangelical believers. Can you imagine doubling the city of Sheboygan or LaCrosse and only having 2 churches and 80 believers?!

Religion Today states that, “Spain has 47 million people, and while most Spaniards were baptized in the Roman Catholic Church, less than 10 percent of the population attend church on a regular basis. The evangelical church is even smaller — less than 1 percent of the population, by most estimates.”

Check out this prayer video for Spain!

Clearly, there is a great need for the gospel in Spain! God has called you and I to take part in bringing the the good news of Jesus Christ to the Spanish people. Thank you for taking part in this work! It is an honor and privilege to be serving with you, and I thank God for you. Let’s keep praying and believing for greater faith in Spain!

With love and prayers,
Kelsey

Partnering with you AND your church

Dave Wensink, a member of Gibbsville Reformed Church, was Tim Tjernagel’s roommate in college. 6 years ago, Dave asked Gibbsville’s Mission Committee to consider partnering in ministry with Tim & Paula. Because of Dave’s request, the Mission Committee decided to interview Tim & Paula. After the interview, Gibbsville decided to partner with and support the Tjernagels in Spain.

Through this partnership, Gibbsville has been able to do ministry in Spain in various ways. They pray, give, love, encourage, support, and more hands-on have done a week-long Basketball and English Camp in Spain with the Tjernagels and are sending one of their own (me!) to do full-time ministry in Spain!

All this has happened because God led Dave to connect the Tjernagel’s ministry in Spain with Gibbsville Reformed Church, and the ripple effects are endless.

Could God use you in this way?

Would you be willing to connect the ministry in Spain and me with your home church? Might your church be interested in doing a Basketball & English Camp in Spain? Might they want to send youth on a World Team Spain internship next summer?

Please prayerfully consider asking your church to consider a partnership with World Team Spain. I’d love to talk with you and your church more about partnering together. Please contact me if you’d like to do that!
